New drinking water rules to bring more information to public

Proposals for implementing the 1998 EC Directive on drinking water quality were issued by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions on 19 April. 1 Among the innovations will be strengthened duties on water companies to notify the public when standards are breached - though the draft regulations may fall short of the Directive's full requirements on this point. A new mechanism is also to be introduced to legalise breaches of standards while remedial action is carried out. The Government intends to keep some standards which have been scrapped or weakened by the Directive.
