Whitehall caught napping over GM seed imports
Seed firm Advanta sparked a furore in May by revealing that it had sold oilseed rape contaminated with genetically modified seed to farmers in the UK who have sown it over 13,700 hectares in the last two years. Major questions still hang over the factual and legal circumstances of the case - but it is clear that officialdom was completely unprepared for a crisis that was waiting to happen.
