"Compliance scheme" envisaged for mobile phone recycling

A UK pilot scheme for recycling mobile phones could evolve into a collective "compliance scheme", similar to those in the packaging sector. Phone manufacturers and network service providers believe this might allow them to meet their obligations under the forthcoming EC Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) at a fraction of the cost of product levies in other EC countries.
