Interface Europe: Leading the way with environmental accounts

Leading carpet manufacturer Interface has promised to turn itself into a sustainable enterprise - and as part of that project its European arm recently prepared a pilot set of environmental accounts in collaboration with Forum for the Future. Using a diversity of valuation methods, the exercise estimated the company's direct environmental impacts to be 7.5% of its profits in 1997. Efforts are now being made to value indirect impacts associated with Interface's raw material purchases - and the company is working on making routine use of the accounts in driving environmental improvement.
