A new focus on drugs in the environment

Around 3,000 pharmaceuticals are discharged into sewers and deposited on agricultural land in sludges and manures. Little is known of their environmental impacts, and attempts at risk assessment are in the very early stages. Few environmental studies have been completed in the UK, but European research suggests that drug residues may pose real risks to human health and wildlife.
