Britain's contaminated land liabilities put at £15 billion

The first detailed official attempt to estimate the scale of contaminated land in Britain has concluded that the area affected is 360,000 hectares - and the costs of assessing and cleaning it up may be around £15.2 billion. Sectors calculated to have created the largest liabilities are petrol stations, engineering, fossil fuel production, waste management and sewage works.
