Contaminated land cash disappears into council coffers

Very little of the funding allocated to local authorities last year to prepare for the new contaminated land regime was actually used for the purpose, according to an independent survey. 1 This year's budgets are little better - suggesting that few councils will be willing to finance the costly site investigations which will generally be needed to confirm land as contaminated until next year at the earliest.
