New sewage schemes likely to follow DETR errors

The Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) has effectively conceded that it made errors in implementing the 1991 EC Directive on urban wastewater treatment. Correcting these is likely to require improved treatment of sewage discharges which affect bathing waters, while improvements planned for 2005 will have to be fast-tracked for completion as soon as possible. Further improvements may also be needed to ensure that shellfish and freshwater fisheries are also protected in line with EC Directives.
