Short-termism on transport and renewables

It took two years for the Government collectively to realise that transport was running close as an electoral issue to health, education and crime. A year on, it has published a transport strategy with promises of £180 billion of public and private investment over the next ten years (see pp 16-19 ). Labour deserves credit for putting big money into the nation's creaking transport infrastructure, much as it has done in the water industry. But, for a Government which professes to believe in "joined-up" thinking and a Department which claims to be at the cutting edge in environmental appraisal of policy, the praise needs to be tempered most strongly.
