Export market eats into UK plastic packaging recycling capacity

British Polythene Industries' 10,000 tonnes per year washing plant at Alida Recycling in Derbyshire was forced to shut down in July because of the low price of packaging waste recovery notes (PRNs) and competition from exporters. With exports set to increase and exporters offering free PRNs, even less money is likely to feed through to domestic recyclers in future, making the UK increasingly dependent on overseas recyclers.
