BP's green image takes a battering

BP's credibility on safety and environmental matters has taken a nose dive following a series of incidents and breaches of legal standards over the last two years. Its Grangemouth complex, where several major incidents have caused growing local concern, is under investigation by two regulatory bodies over a serious fire in June. Its Coryton refinery has been on the receiving end of enforcement action on six occasions since early last year. And to crown BP's embarrassment, in May the Sullom Voe oil terminal in the Shetlands became the first UK site to have its registration under the EC's eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS) suspended.
