Heat on incinerators and landfill gas over renewables

The status of landfill gas and energy-from-waste incinerators as "renewable" forms of energy is being called into question by policy developments at UK and EC level. Environmentalists have fastened on an EC proposal that neither should be treated as renewables to call for their exclusion from the new support mechanism for renewable energy being developed in the UK — and their demands have not been rejected outright by officials casting round for ways of using the limited funding available to bring on new renewables such as offshore wind and biomass.
