Agency toys with EMSs in environmental regulation

A scheme promising reduced regulatory oversight to companies with environmental management systems (EMSs) could be operational as early as next year if an Environment Agency experiment proves successful. But the regulator will have to tread carefully if it wants to maintain public confidence in its approach, and many both within and outside the Agency — including its Scottish counterpart — remain to be convinced of its worth.
