North West fined £20,000 on unfit water charges

North West Water has been convicted of five charges of supplying water unfit for human consumption in October after consumers in Nantwich received oily water. The incident resulted from surface water drainage being fed into the water treatment process — suggesting that the company had not learned lessons from the much more serious Burncrooks incident which affected thousands of people in Scotland in 1997.
