Scottish waste company fined

Industrial waste spreading contractor Snowie was fined £1,000 at Alloa Sheriff Court on 5 October after it admitted polluting a burn at Blairingone, near Dollar in Central Scotland. The prosecution was brought following a report by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

The incident occurred in May 1998 after Snowie had been injecting waste from chicken processing factories into farmland. Waste entered a tributary of the Cadger Burn via field drains.

Snowie was fined £1,000 after pleading guilty to a charge under section 30(F) of the Control of Pollution Act 1974. It was the company's second prosecution this year. In February it was fined £3,000 after distillery waste entered a river (ENDS Report 302, p 47 ).
