30% of petrol stations contaminate groundwater, MTBE study finds
The petrol additive MTBE does "not present a significant risk" to water supplies, an Environment Agency investigation has concluded. However, the study found that contamination was quite widespread at low levels and monitoring by water companies limited. It also found there was insufficient information on the threat to private or industrial boreholes. 1
