Guidance on radioactive discharges revised after long wait

Long-awaited draft guidance on the regulation of radioactive discharges from nuclear sites has been issued by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. 1 The paper will require progressive reductions in discharges, in line with international obligations - but also allows for broad exceptions to this rule, which may not be. It also points to a Whitehall tussle over civil regulation of military nuclear sites, and introduces EC radioactivity-in-food levels as an additional constraint on discharges.
