UK shipping company loses case against habitat designation

A rearguard action by a UK shipping company to block the designation of wildlife sites under the 1992 EC Directive on habitats has failed before the European Court of Justice. The Court ruled that economic and social interests, including those of industry, are not be taken into account when Member States tackle the task of designation. The decision is in line with Government policy.
