Zeneca: Putting a price on waste

Pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals giant Zeneca was uncomfortable with the waste reduction target it inherited when it was spun off from ICI in 1992. A Cost of Waste programme was launched soon afterwards to help prioritise waste minimisation projects by capturing the full price of wasted raw materials and waste disposal costs - with startling results. The programme has since saved the company millions of pounds per year and helped cut its hazardous waste generation by a third.
