Increase in landfilling of Europe's plastics waste

The proportion of western Europe's plastics waste going to landfill rose between 1995 and 1997, despite continued expansion of recycling infrastructure. Growth in waste arisings, alongside a sharp fall in exports for recycling outside the region, contributed to the increase in landfill, according to figures from the Association of Plastics Manufacturers in Europe (APME). There was also less energy recovery.
