DGXI seeks to redefine municipal waste incineration as disposal
Relegation of incineration of mixed municipal wastes and paper and cardboard to the level of disposal operations - regardless of whether they are used as a fuel - has been proposed by the European Commission's Environment Directorate, DGXI, as part of plans to redefine the meaning of "energy recovery". The move has drawn fire from UK packaging interests because it would place the packaging waste recovery targets way out of reach.
