WHO bathing water guidelines herald tough new EC standards

Stringent new guidelines for the microbiological quality of bathing waters have been published by the World Health Organization (WHO).1 The guidelines are a strong indicator of the direction likely to be taken by the European Commission in drafting proposals to amend the 1976 EC Directive on bathing water quality. Adoption of the standards could mean a drastic reduction in compliance for UK waters.
