Cancer increase linked to Chernobyl

Thyroid cancers in Scottish women increased by over 45% between 1986 and 1995, according to an official report compiled by the National Health Service. 1 The cancer is relatively rare but three times more common in women than men. The major risk factor is exposure to radioactive isotopes - such as iodine 131 which is produced from radioactive fallout and tends to concentrate in milk.
