Consensus conference flushes out policy shifts on nuclear waste

In a major policy shift, Environment Minister Michael Meacher and nuclear waste disposal company Nirex have offered strong support for the underground "storage" of radioactive wastes in a monitorable and retrievable fashion. Nirex is now urging the Government to make sure that it, or its successor, is independent of the nuclear industry - a move which is being strongly resisted by British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL).
