Rising concern over MTBE in groundwater

Environment Minister Michael Meacher has asked the Environment Agency to monitor groundwater for the petrol additive methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE). The Agency suspects that MTBE contamination may be far more widespread than previously thought - a concern which has led to a ban on use of the additive in California, the world's largest market.
