Greenhouse battleground in incineration vs landfill debate

Debate over the relative merits of incineration and landfill took a new twist in May with a report sponsored by incineration businesses which concluded that their plants emit only half as much greenhouse gas as landfills - while generating 70% more electricity. 1 But because the work fails to consider impacts over the full life cycle, the industry will need to investigate further before it can challenge recent US conclusions that incineration and landfill are on a par. Meanwhile, a study for the Department of Trade and Industry has concluded that incinerators emit nearly as much carbon dioxide as gas-fired power stations.
