Sustainable development strategy ducks resource efficiency challenge

A new sustainable development strategy, billed as paving the way to a better quality of life for everyone, was published in May. 1 Like its 1994 predecessor, the document is less a strategy than a framework, and lacks new targets. It also avoids engagement with the main challenge it identifies for the next century - that of improving the UK's resource efficiency in a world with a rapidly increasing population and a global environment under growing stress. But there are some new initiatives on the business front - and the strategy also bears the marks of the Government's push for "joined up" working in its plans for measuring and reporting on progress.
