Peat sales soar as retailers remain reluctant to go "peat-free"

Use of peat as a growing medium increased by almost 70% between 1993 and 1997 while sales of peat-free alternatives dropped by a fifth, according to a report by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR). 1 Major DIY retailers remain reluctant to go "peat-free" but hope to raise awareness by labelling products as "peat-based" as well as "peat-free". Meanwhile, B&Q has floated the idea of an audit certification scheme for peat bogs.
