Unspecified "major projects" to benefit from planning reforms

Proposals to streamline the planning process for major projects were unveiled by the Government in May. 1 Many could prove highly controversial as they may limit the rights of objectors to be heard at public inquiries. The Government says the new procedures will apply only to projects of "national significance" - but has failed to allay suspicion that they could be used to push through unpopular projects such as dozens of new waste incinerators.
