OFT blocks battery levy - sending ominous signals to other schemes
Plans by the battery industry to fund the collection of nickel/cadmium batteries with a product levy have collapsed following opposition from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) - casting doubt on the prospect for a similar levy proposed for recycling electronic equipment. The battery industry now sees legislation as the only way for the UK to meet any recycling targets included in the proposed EC batteries Directive.
