New regulations to protect drinking water supplies against contamination by the pathogen cryptosporidium came into force in England and Wales on 30 June. 1 Water companies face stringent new monitoring requirements for around 200 water sources at an initial cost of £16 million per year - but the potential financial benefit to consumers is much greater.
