Ministers draw up guidelines for new EC chemicals strategy

Unexpectedly ambitious proposals for reforming the EC's chemicals policy emerged from the Environment Council on 24-25 June. The European Commission has been asked to prepare a chemicals strategy which is expressly based on the precautionary principle, helps to implement marine pollution agreements to end discharges of hazardous substances by 2020, and accelerates the process of risk assessment and management.
