Electronic component suppliers unaware of eco-design

A need to promote awareness of eco-design and the planned EC Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment among small and medium-sized UK component suppliers has been identified by a survey by the Centre for Sustainable Design (CSD). Reasons include the priority given by multinationals to "least cost sourcing" and the fact that many components are exported to countries where eco-design requirements are low. Greater involvement would best be pursued by encouraging component customers to instigate supply chain partnerships, providing basic education and training, and simple tools such as checklists.
