New shellfish waters designated under threat of EC legal action

The Government announced the designation of 76 new shellfish waters and the extension of 17 existing ones in July. 1 The move completed a programme to revise the UK's implementation of an EC Directive under threat of legal action from the European Commission. But the designations came too late to stop the beginning of the legal process - and the Commission may now consider claims by the shellfish industry that the new measures are inadequate to implement the Directive.
