Ministers call for EC sustainability strategy by 2001

A push for the completion of an EC sustainable development strategy in 2001 is to be made by Environment Ministers following discussions at an informal meeting in Helsinki on 23-25 July. Sectoral targets for improving eco-efficiency, supported by new economic instruments to reduce resource consumption, were identified as key needs if economic growth is to be decoupled from environmental degradation.
