Paper firm fined for effluent breaches
Activecraft Thompsons Board Mills appeared before Penrith magistrates on 21 May to plead guilty to six charges of polluting a Cumbrian watercourse with trade effluent. The court heard the company had a history of effluent breaches and failed to act on a works notice served by the Environment Agency in April 1998. Thompsons was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,500.
