Groundwater contamination from a chemical works in Barking, Essex, forced the temporary closure of a nearby pub this summer when levels of solvent vapour in its cellar reached potentially explosive levels. The company faces a hefty remediation bill, along with a claim for damages from the pub landlord and possible prosecution by the Environment Agency.
