Many local authorities seeking alternatives to large incineration schemes are showing interest in small-scale gasification and pyrolysis technology. But the lack of any demonstration facility - and the fact that systems being deployed in Germany would be far too expensive for the UK market - mean there remains a difficult credibility gap. News from Northumbrian Water, meanwhile, suggests that developers may also struggle to meet limits under the proposed EC Directive on waste incineration.
