New research on health effects of landfills

The Government unveiled a new programme of research into the health impacts of landfill sites in September, to be led by the Department of Health and the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. The announcement follows epidemiological studies which have suggested links between landfills and birth defects (ENDS Report 283, pp 14-15 ). One Europe-wide study found an association between proximity to landfills and defects such as spinabifida and circulatory abnormalities. Almost half of the sites included were in the UK.
