UK oil spills hit new record

The number of oil spills around the UK coast passed 800 for the first time in 1998, according to an annual survey by the Advisory Committee on Pollution of the Sea (ACOPS). 1 But the quantity of oil spilled declined, and fines for oil pollution offences showed a hefty increase. At global level, major oil spills from tankers were the second lowest on record last year.
