Chemical industry struggles to keep lid on CO<SUB>2</SUB> emissions

The difficulty of reconciling current patterns of industrial development with the EC's greenhouse gas emission targets have been strikingly underlined by new figures from the European chemical industry federation CEFIC. The industry improved its energy efficiency by 13.5% between 1990 and 1997 - but steeper increases in output have pushed its carbon dioxide emissions back above 1990 levels. The UK's chemicals sector has a better story to tell on emissions - thanks in part to much smaller growth in production volumes.
