Mattel plans switch to plant-based plastics for toys

The world's largest toy manufacturer, Mattel, has revealed that it is investigating the use of plastics made from agricultural crops rather than petrochemicals for its products and packaging. The timing of the announcement appeared designed to deflect criticism over the group's use of phthalates in toys - but the move is another body blow to the PVC industry.
