Ozone layer still under threat as nations agree modest new controls

Limited extra controls on HCFCs and methyl bromide, along with new funding to assist developing countries in phasing out ozone-depleting chemicals, were agreed at the eleventh meeting of parties to the Montreal Protocol in Beijing which ended on 3 December. The modest steps taken at the meeting came at the end of a year in which new scientific findings have underlined that ozone depletion is likely to continue for decades ahead.
