Greenpeace success on habitats Directive may hit offshore oil industry

The High Court has held that the Government was wrong in its view that the 1992 EC Directive on habitats does not extend beyond the UK's 12-mile territorial limit. In an important case, the court concluded that the Directive applies to the Continental Shelf and the 200-mile fishing limit. The decision will require new implementing regulations, and may impose significant constraints on continued deep sea exploration and eventual exploitation of oil and gas, especially in the North East Atlantic.
