Move to toughen sentencing for environmental offences

New sentencing guidelines for environmental offences proposed by a Home Office panel urge the courts to take full account of companies' ability to pay when setting fines, to impose fines which have a "real economic impact" on large firms, and to make greater use of compensation orders. 1 The move reflects long-standing complaints from the Environment Agency over the low level of fines.
