  • Overcoming a reluctance in the UK waste industry to explore overseas markets, Shanks & McEwan (SME) has stepped into the Belgian market with the £65 million acquisition of four businesses with combined sales of £55.2 million in 1996. One of them, Sobry, treats industrial waste and makes waste fuels for cement kilns - ironic given SME's opposition to the practice in the UK. The French waste firm, Sita, had been obliged to sell the businesses following an intervention by European competition authorities.
