FGD abatement failure signals surge in power station emissions

Flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) equipment at National Power's Drax station - the UK's most expensive anti-pollution measure - has broken down and may be out of action for up to 18 months. The company has applied to the Environment Agency for permission to increase the station's authorised emissions of sulphur dioxide.
