Energy-saving measures on lamps, TVs and VCRs

An EC Directive introducing mandatory energy labels for household lamps will take effect in mid-1999. Meanwhile, a voluntary agreement by television and video recorder manufacturers to reduce the standby energy consumption of their products has been accepted by the European Commission - even though companies holding a third of the EC market have failed to sign and the agreement contains no sanctions for non-compliance.
