Ban on asbestos deferred, new rules on workplaces proposed

Government action on last year's promise to prohibit virtually all remaining uses of asbestos has been suspended following a hitch in EC moves towards a ban. Instead, a consultation paper has proposed tighter controls on work with asbestos, as well as a new duty on employers to locate asbestos materials in all non-domestic buildings and prepare risk management plans.
