Nipa Laboratories has been served with a prohibition notice by the Environment Agency following a release of sulphur dioxide and hydrogen chloride from its Oswaldtwistle site in Lancashire. The chemical firm is bared from operating the process until the Agency and Health and Safety Executive are satisfied that it can operate safely. Three prohibition notices were served on the site in 1995 after a series of fish kills in the River Calder ( Report 244, p 4).
